The Road to Ely - Trip Roundup

The Road to Ely . . . There And Back Again

For the second year in a row, our little family spent a week at a YMCA family camp on Bear Island Lake near Ely.  This year I was a bit more purposeful in exploring the town, and planning food stops along the way there and back again.  Here are links to full posts, and below are random odds and ends . . .

The Little Mermaid Cafe - Askov, MN

Biwabik Pizza Co - Biwabik, MN

Carlson's Pasty and Sausage Kitchen - Biwabik, MN

The Chickadee Coffeehouse & Deli - Barnum, MN

Three Jewels Pottery - Ely, MN

Back on the Rack - Ely, MN

Ben Franklin Crafts & Home Goods - Ely, MN

Art & Soul Gallery & Gift House - Ely, MN

Ely's Old-Fashioned Candy - Ely, MN

Brainstorm Bakery - Ely, MN

Northern Grounds - Ely, MN

Mitska's Market - Ely, MN

Back at the camp, we stayed in the same cabin with a lovely view.  If they'd chainsaw off the tops of a handful of trees to the left, it could be a magnificent view.  You'll need to enjoy the view from inside the cabin though, as the mosquitoes are FUCKING RIDICULOUS.  Just miserable and horrible unless you want to walk around in a hazmat suit.  Even mid-day at the height of the sun and heat, the mosquitos suck.  It's a granola Kumbaya camp, so I doubt they do any serious spraying.  Tragic

On the way into town from the south, I know I'm close when I see this truck in it's forever home

Just down the road past the Welcome To Ely sign, there was a house with a few sweet green-tone trucks out front

Apparently Ely is a FedEx meet-up spot, because I saw this action on two seperate days.  Assuming the big one if from the DC, and a couple of them takes packages further out into the sticks

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Dollar General Ely that
was an abject disaster zone (no, that is NOT the DG with the canoes).  The guy behind the counter was uber friendly and chatty with customers, but the store was just a wreck.  Missionaries should come in and tidy up.  I worked five years of xmas’ at Toys R Us in my teens, and even after the worst night at the height of the season the store never looked this bad

Well, I'll leave with some pics of Ely's Historic State Theater, showing new flicks and classics for only $7 . . .
