The Chickadee Coffeehouse & Deli - Barnum, MN
A STELLAR find between the Twin Cities and Duluth that I wish was walking distance from home . . .
Man, this place has a lot of things going on for it. Not only is this an excellent place to hit for a reasonably healthy meal, but it's the kind of place you'd like to just hang out at on a regular basis. I soooooooo wish there was a place like this nearby home. Where to start . . . ?We'll start with what we ordered, but even then, where do you start!?! Holy Schnikes. Frankly, there's an overwhelming number of choices and options . . . no one will blame you if your brain locks up
The lady had the Roast Beef Sandwich with a beautiful Chickadee Salad (Romaine, Cukes, Tomato, Feta, Black Olives, Sunflower Seeds, Green Onion, Sprouts, and huge chunks of Avocado with Balsamic Vinaigrette). Finding something like this on the middle of nowhere is special
The kiddo had the Grilled Cheese Sandwich that had a nice cheesy pull
I wasn't starving, and hit with a case of Analysis Paralysis, opted for a cup of their Chicken Avocado Lime soup and a half Caesar Salad. The soup was Minnesota tame and begging for more seasoning; the salad perfectly acceptable with nice croutons. We also picked up an excellent tart lemon bar
Before you grab a seat, hit the head. It's ALWAY nice to find a clean pleasant bathroom when you're on the road
Eating in you can sit out on the long covered porch reminiscent of The Old West, or various cozy tables inside, where everywhere you look is something for sale. Soups, breads, art, knickknacks, plants, and books. Most of it appears to be locally produced. The lady and kid bought an aloe plant, and I bought a book by a Barnum author, "The Mermaid of Lake Superior" (supporting local authors)Downstairs is rec room that I'm sure is used for local groups and clubs. Have your Fantasy Football draft, your quilting group, your birthday party, your what have you. Or hell, just hang out playing games, reading, watching the big game, or fighting Voldemort
The books themselves comprise an extensive library, and I happily found years worth of reading. I had to ask about it, and the owner said they're his dad's books put down there after he passed
Whew. This is a long ass post. There's a lot to share though. Chickadee is a place worthy of your time, and again, I wish it were right down the block
