Ely's Old-Fashioned Candy - Ely, MN
A Candy Journey thru history . . .
I was expecting a quaint shop with house made candy. With maybe people making candy behind the counter. Nope, not so much. The name does say Old-Fashioned, not Home-Made. In a twist it's pre-packaged commerce and a mini living museum of candy through the decadesOn the west wall are three sections of candy displayed based on the year they were invented, which is pretty damn cool. Amazing that some of these have been around for well over a hundred years
A handful have signage, and I was particularly interested in the Twin Bing's I'd never heard of. Above is the version with cherry nougatAs I said, I expected House Made candy, and there were only a couple of cases worth. I have to say I was a bit miffed . . . with so little candy made by them, how are they out of basic chocolate fudge at 2pm on a Friday? Yer killing me, Smalls
Anywho. In addition, it's a catch-all for more current candies, toys, games, stuffed animals, clothing, sodas, and a plethora of merchandise and paraphernalia. Plus a canoe full of Salt Water Taffy that takes up significant valuable chunk of real estate right in the middle of the store
The place wasn't what I expected, but had some coolness none the less. If anything, it's a bang up place to pick up stocking stuffers
