Sanborn Canoe & BaseCamp Provisions - Winona, MN

A hidden canoe and paddle shop with impromtu tours . . .

The lady has been going to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for decades.  While researching things to do in Winoa, I ran across a piece on Sanborn Canoe on an Explore Minnesota, Minnesota’s Best Home Decor and Furniture Designers.  When saw they had a retail shop, BaseCamp Provisions, I figured she'd get a kick out of it

And get a kick out of it she did

We arrived to a light industrial area to find a non-descript green overgrown shed lacking signage other than stenciling on a door by the dock.  I wasn't quite sure they'd even be open, but not only were they open, the gentleman who greeted us asked if we'd like a tour?  Heck yeah, sure

He began to tell us a short bit about their company history, and while walking us around the production areas, gave us an overview of how they make canoe's and paddles.  He was open to any and all questions, and we learned a thing or two.  Was pretty cool

They make cribbage boards, decorations, kitchen utensils, and other items with the wood scraps

As we were leaving, he mentioned his wife worked at the Winona Visitor Center downtown, and if were were going there we should say, "Hi".  Well, we did, and she was on an errand.  But days later, on our way out of town we stopped at the Center on Winona Lake, and lo and behold thar she was.  Very friendly, and she said she sends people over to the canoe shop all the time

(PS, the gift shop at the lake is WAAAAAAAAY better than the dark little storefront downtown)

Anyways, check the place out.  Was a nice little diversion
