Lohengrin's Wirtshaus & Bar - Munich, Germany

A dream of a German restaurant . . . 

Sitting smackdab in the middle of a residential neighborhood is Lohengrin's Wirtshaus & Bar, where we feasted on traditional tastes and some twists.  The kitchen knows what the hell they're doing 

The weather was gorgeous for most of our ten day trip during mid-September, and it was a lovely twenty minute or so walk from our stay at the Westin Grand Munich (from other parts of the city you could also take a tram or train to the Effnerplatz stop right near the hotel and walk this way).  Along a thin woodland path with playground and workout stations, and through the Kleingartenverein Daueranlage No.19 allotment gardens

We were mystified as to what these actually were, so asked a helpful chap living down the block.  He said they were small plots of land for people to rent each year to grow a garden, flowers, and have a little shack.  A place to get some fresh air and relax from life in the city.  You're not allowed to live in them, though, and each association has their own rules outside of the government rules 

After that lovely walk we relaxed into the charming Lohengrin's.  Not very busy on an early Thursday evening, but it WAS two days before Oktoberfest, so maybe the calm before the storm 

Thanks for the tour, Mike Z, but how was the food!?!  Top notch all around.  There were six of us, so we made a fair dent in the menu . . . 

We started with two orders of the Pretzel Dumpling Carpaccio w/ Herb Vinaigrette and Sauteed Mushrooms.  This was PHENOMENAL.  We absolutely devoured this.  The thin sliced dumplings slathered in the vin, the crisp and fry on the shrooms, the beautiful greens . . . everything worked.  We crushed this.  I'm so glad the server suggested one wouldn't be enough

One was more than enough for of the massive portion of Homemade Roast Aspic w/ Red Onions and Pan-fried Potatoes.  Big hunks of mystery meat suspended in gelatin is probably not most people's jam, but I had to order it.  Fittingly, I was frankly the only one at the talbe who cared much for this, and it did get a bit overwhelming.  I ended up saving near half for a late night snack a couple days later

The star of our entrees was probably my dad's Mountain Climber Cutlet, young pork stuffed with South Tyrolean bacon and mountain cheese, served on roasted dumplings with beer sauce in a hot platter.  Rich and decadant

My Oven-fresh Crusted Roast Port w/ Potato Dumpling in Dark Beer Sauce was tame by comparison, but the pork and spongy dumpling were perfect in the sauce.  I especially liked the thick hunk of crispy cracklin

Off the Specials, was the Leg of Lamb in a thick dark sauce with green beans.  The tastes I had were deep and rich

Keeping the schnitzel going, Breaded Pork Cutlet with Spätzle subbed for fries, and both were solid examples

I want to say this was a nice pork steak with fries, that came with a intricate side salad 

Lastly a Baked Potato with crap ton of Herb Quark and that intricate side salad, paired with a Skewer of Garlic Butter Sautéed Shrimp

Whew.  Fantastic.  Just an a dream of a meal

I went back a couple night later, after a special day trip to Salzburg and the rest of the family had crashed out for the night, hoping to try some other dishes.  The Homemade Goulash Soup, the Pork Crackling Lard in Clay Pot w/ Fried Onions, Bavarian Sausage Salad, Cold Roast w/ Freshly Grated Horseradish and Pickles, and/or . . . well, let's be honest, probably another crack at the Pretzel Dumpling Carpaccio as well.  Unfortunately, restaurants seem to roll up early in that part of Munich, because when I arrived at 10 the kitchen had already been closed for half an hour, even though they're open 'til 11.  Same deal at another place nearby that closed at midnight.  Luckily I still had the Aspic in the mini-fridge at the hotel

So yeah, Wirtshaus Lohengrins!  If there's ever another trip to Munich, you'll be damn sure I'm hitting this place up again
