Faustus Schnitzelhaus - Berlin, Germany
Straight to the schnitzel for our first dinner in Germany . . .
The first city on our ten day trip was two nights in Berlin. A block from the Hotel Riu Plaza Berlin was Faustus Schnitzelhaus across the plaza from Wittenbergplatz Underground Station
Inside I felt it looked strangely like a German restaurant took over an Italian space. There must have been thousands of dollars worth of bottles of wine on every flat surface that wasn't a diner table. Either way, it was sufficiently dark to make the following pictures not the greatest, but oh well, here's some shitty pics . . .
The highlighted star of the menu. Appropriately for a Schnitzelhaus, nearly all of us went with one version or another of their Schnitzel. Each was eye-poppingly massive in size
I rolled with the Urklassiker-Schnitzel vom Kalb mit spezieller Gewürzpandade Tarhana. Veal with spicy Tarhana breading. If it added something to the breading, I can't say I noticed other than an orange tint without any spice flavor. At the time it seemed like they just added paprika. Either way, it was a huge portion, and more breading than I needed to eat in three sittings much less one, so I ended up scraping more than half of it off. Didn't seem anything special about the veal, and nothing about it frankly interesting, but it did the trick. The potatoes that came with it were solid, the cream of mushroom sauce ok, the cranberry sauce fine. No reflection necessarily on Faustus, but it was the first and last schnitzel I had on the trip. In retrospect I should have gone with maybe the pork knuckle or something more unusual and just snagged bites of everybody else's schnitzels. Oh well
One of my brothers thankfully went rogue and ordered their Berliner Platte, and I'm sooooo glad he did. Currywurst, small grilled sausages, fries, side salad . . . and best of all a Berliner Boulette, basically a small meatloaf, which I thought was the best thing on the table
Overall Faustus . . . I can't say I was enamored with it at the time, and with soooooo many other places it's not one I need to go back to, but you could do worse. It was a fine stop for plane/train/uber weary travellers to get a first go at German food on vacation
