Minnesota Marine Art Museum - Winona, MN

An excellent focused yet diverse museum with whimsy . . .

The initial impetus of my wanting to visit Winona was the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.  The majesty and mystery of the sea, the fierce power and quiet depths.  While I was looking forward to ye olde Masters oil paintings of tall masted ships of yore, the MMAM truly impresses with the shear variety of styles.  Minnesota artists and subjects, numerous contemporary works.  Here's a few favorites . . .

I especially loved a number of watercolors by a Minnesota artist (by way of Malasia), Kar-Keat Chong

Of particular delight was the "Splish, Splash, Story: Selections from The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art"

(Psst . . . Closes on July 26th 2026, so get yer butt there while you still can)

With a kiddo who's been Pooh-core for half a year, and who've I played Poohsticks with out at the farm, this was an especially fun find . . .

In addition to the book art was a sitting/reading/play area for the kiddos

There's another smaller area that's permenantly part of the museum

As a parent, it's always Always ALWAYS appreciated when thought is given to a child's experience, especially in a place like a museum or art gallery.  How about a help-yourself scavenger hunt station with sheets of varying difficulty?  With playful pencils, sitckers, laser pointers, and small prize bin?  Yes please

There's a small cafe that was closed while we were there, but it was a Tuesday and off season

And of course no respectable or fiscally responsible museum is without a gift shop

Without a doubt, the MMAM itself makes Winona a worthwhile trip, an I can only imagine a even moreso in summer/fall is when you can enjoy the riverfront and trails
