Muddled Thyme - Winona, MN
Excellent music and commendable pizza . . .
Growing up on Chicago thin crust and deep dish, you won’t ever find me going out of my way for Neopolitan brick oven pizza. Not quite my jam. Chewy crust, usually blackened/burned on the edges yet soupy in the middle, and meagerly topped if not anemically topped. Overpriced for what they are. But with options slim on a Monday night in Winona, and wanting something easy after our travels, we decided take a flyer on Muddled Thyme
Things started out on a nice foot. The kiddo was pleased with her large Kiddie Cocktail having three different colored straws. Somebody knows how to play to the younger setFor an app we began with their Crab Artichoke Dip. Certainly decedent, and there was a hint of crab taste, but I felt crab itself was lacking? Maybe overwhelmed by the cheese and buttery toast. A nice start, though
For pizzas, the kiddo jumped on choosing the Yolo, I think mainly because of it’s name. Excellent pepperoni, bacon, moz. The Italian sausage tasted mostly like plain hamburger, though, and the large hard pancetta chunks were a bit disorienting, but overall it was a meatlovers win

Dill Pickles and Alfredo Sauce on pizza is having it’s moment, and since trying it at the Minnesota State Fair, the lady was all for their Dillicious. Vegan btw, not that I noticed taste-wise
I’m kicking myself a bit that we didn’t go more adventurous with the Fig & Bleu (Fig spread, gorgonzola, ricotta, caramelized onions, arugula, prosciutto, balsamic glaze). Maybe another time I say, which means I wouldn’t mind going back, and that says a lot about the way they do Neopolitan
Another reason to go back? The music playing on the overhead was excellent the entire time. Gorillaz "On Melancholy Hill", Chili Peppers, The Strokes, Julian Casablancas, Killers to name some. Whether that's currated or luck, I don't know, but good on them
Of note, there was a massive snowstorm the day before, and from what I saw, downtown Winona did a piss poor job of clearing their sidewalks. Once we were able to navigate our way inside, Muddled Thyme was an attractive big open high ceilinged place. It made for a drafty room on a chilly late winter Monday, unfortunately. Kinda wished the pizza oven was in the middle of the room. Overall though, we had an enjoyable meal, and everything was priced quite reasonably. Plus, poking back through past Weekly Specials on their IG, they generally have an interesting new pizza and app to try. I'd definitely be up for popping in again next time in town
