The Millstone Family Restaurant - Milbank, SD

While visiting family out in western Minnesota, we took a day trip down to Ortonville.  Lunch options on a Monday were slim pickings, so we tried our luck fifteen minutes across the border.  Don't let the grim exterior and surroundings scare you away . . . this is a nice little find in north eastern South Dakota

It certainly doesn't have curb appeal, though.  A squat squarish non-descript building in shades of battleship grey.  No decoration or visible signage other than the pleasant Millstone Family Restaurant sign with an empty sign frame below it.  Doesn't help that it's in the rundownish parking lot of a motel, and it's March in The Tundra

But entering is a different story.  Oh, it won't win any design awards, but it's fairly pleasant for what they had to work with.  Certainly doesn't hurt seeing plenty of assumedly fresh bake goods

We were promptly sat in the larger dining room.  A kids menu/coloring/activity placemat and a small pack of crayons were set down.  The kiddo jumped to work, and ignored us for the next ten minutes.  Her choice of the Kraft mac and bag nuggets was boring, but I'll say that I appreciate there being nine different choices

The lady went with one of the Lunch Specials.  An (over fried, I felt) Sysco Fish Sandwich w/ Smoked Red Pepper Gouda Soup.  She enjoyed them, and $8.49 seemed fair

Goof's Burger w/ Fried Egg

Necessary Close-up

I went all in with Goof's Burger topped with a fried egg.  I asked for it medium rare, and the waitress told me the cook doesn't do "to order".  Ok.  And you can see why.  It's just a basic thawed out industrial Sysco patty.  Odd that there are eight side choices with no upcharge for any of them, but lettuce, tomato, and onion are an extra buck fifty

Was it a $17.48 burger and onion rings?  Meh.  The bacon was excellent quality, the egg was fried nicely, the sausage patty was thick an had some spice to it, the bun was toasted perfectly, I asked for and was brought mustard and two kinds of hot sauce.  Pro fry on the bag Sysco onion rings.  I'll call it a Worth It for being out in the South Dakota sticks, and would happily order it again

We capped lunch off with a slice of fresh decent+ blueberry pie that was on special for two bucks.  The waitress even offered to warm it up and add whipped cream.  Yes please and thank you

So, as the kiddo said afterwards, "Judge a restaurant by it's food, not by how it looks".  I agree, man.  We'd stop in again
