Perkins Restaurant & Bakery - Maplewood, MN

This piece is a remembrance, and a shout out to a slice of kindness and caring the world could use more of . . .

I had an early appointment in Maplewood, and looking at options for a bite, I spotted Perkins.  Hadn't been in there in over thirty years.  Decided to pop it for old time’s sake.  The place is looking pretty rough on the outside, but not too shabby on the inside.  Waaaaaay back in the day (Late 80's/Early 90's) it was one of the post-work “Locals” for the teenage Toys”R”Us crew (along with Applebee’s and Baker’s Square)

If you're above a certain age and have lived in Minnesota long enough, you've been to Perkins.  You know the food.  It's mostly perfectly fine.  They have their morning Regulars, and if you order coffee a carafe will be sat before you in record time.  My usual was a double order of hashbrowns and a chocolate milk shake.  Since they they didn’t HAVE milkshakes, I was forced to resort to shenanigans.  I'd order a glass of milk, chocolate ice cream, then make my own shake at the table (yes).  The waitresses always loved that . . . not (Remember "Not"?)

Anyways, on this recent visit, I was chatting up the lady running the show, and found they sell puzzles to support Give Kids The World Village. An organization that gifts critically ill kids and families a vacation. New wrapped puzzles were $10; used were $3 (plenty more puzzles behind the bakery cases). And YES, they do take puzzle donations. I have no affiliation with either Perkins or GKTW, just thought it was cool. Plus, I picked up a fun looking puzzle

So yeah, go take a nostalgia trip, buy a puzzle, help some kids and families
