Cabella Brunch Cafe - Chicago, IL
A bit of brunchshine in Logan Square . . .
What a lovely way to spend a overcast late Saturday morning. We met up with one of my twenty/thirtysomething baby cousins who biked over, and had excellent dishes with lively conversation in a sleak yet bright warm setting. When people live in the city part of large cities like Chicago, and wax poetic about their "little" neighborhood, this is the kind of joint they're waxing about
Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and passionate. His pride in the menu was obvious and justified
We started off with Caribella's Sorullitos, corn fritters with a mayo ketchup dip. They won't set the world on fire, but they were a fine way to tide us over
I had to go for the Yuca Pulled Pork Skillet, and our guy was especially proud of the low and slow method of cooking the pork. The dish was fantastic, with grilled onions, peppers, and I had them add jalapeno. The bed of yuca cubes were a perfect vehicle. My one nit to pick, and I'm not out of line here, is . . . why fry up photo worthy eggs and break the yolks by putting the avocado slices on top? That the diner's little something to do and ooh and ahh about if you will. Annoying, but someday I'll get over it. Maybe. No, probably not. Whatevs, still a great dish
The lady was quite pleased with the Avocado Breakfast Club on Ciabatta
Wasn't much of a surprise that the kid jumped at the fun French Toast Flight, with three different syrups, and we were happy to chip in and help polish them off. Strawberries & Chocolate, Coquito (Coconut, Vanilla, and Cinnamon), and Guava
We added on a side of sausage links because the kiddo and I are like that. I also couldn't help being enticed by the Spiced Abuelita Hot Chocolate with Scotch Bonnets, because, hot peppers. Can't say there was much of a kick, but t'was a nice hot chocolate a couple of shots of rum away from being excellent. Maybe someday
All around, a steallar brunch out. I'll go back with bells on
Ooo, wait, can't forget to mention the bathroom. On a summer day, the windtunnel AC in the bathroom was MAGNIFICENT . . .
Anywho. Just go. Eat. Talk. Chillax. Enjoy life
