Gordy’s Hi-Hat and Gordy’s Warming House - Cloquet, MN

Gordy is not effing around . . .

The famous Gordy's Hi-Hat in Cloquet, MN.  Quite the operation, but in dire need of more than two cashiers . . . or maybe their kitchen can only handle orders from two cashiers at a time.   It’s a sprawling compound with two restaurants, a separate large bathroom facility, a playground, multiple outdoor seating areas covered and not.  Was the property like this before being on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives?

On our way up north to a YMCA family camp, we tried to go to the main building, but the line was too ridiculous.  So we went to Gordy's Warming House next door where they do pre-made sandwiches, ice cream, coffees and whatnot.    No waiting there at all, and it has a drive-thru unlike the main event

On the way back we tried again.  I jumped out of the car right away, and the girls hit the bathroom and playground while I waited in line.  Took forty five minutes from that to sitting down with food.  Not totally egregious, and the food is mostly ok (not you Gordy's Famous Chili) but it's nothing I would go out of my way for again

The line in the parking lot . . . to get to the line on the patio . . . to the line in the front entry . . . to the line to order . . . where I was completely cheesed off that there was ONE cashier?  On an August Saturday afternoon??  Are you effing kidding me???  A second one eventually hopped on, but, Eff an A

Gordy's Big “G” and Bacon Deluxe.  They were solid worthy burgers that the lady loved and that I'd be happy to have again, just not worthy of the wait.  (ONE CASHIER!?!)

Since I didn’t know if we’d ever be back, I ordered us five of the six sides.  Deep fried ‘shrooms, curds, onion rings, coleslaw, and potato salad.  All were fine.  Nothing stood out to me, other than disappointment that the Homemade Onion Rings weren’t any better than frozen Sysco.  The lady declared the Wisconsin Cheese Curds some of the best she’d ever had, which is high praise from her

Gordy’s self proclaimed Famous Chili. The epitome of Minnesotans fear of spice.  I could eat chili every day of my life, but not Gordy's. While I appreciate it not being kidney bean shy, it was basically a bowl of Minnestoa-spiceless mush with way too many large tomato chunks. Oh well

So, I wouldn’t NOT go back to Gordy’s.  No line out the door, I’d be happy to stop there on the way up north or back.  The lady loved it, and she for sure will be back.  I'm not trashing the place, far from it, but if I’m going to wait in line for half an hour and another fifteen minutes to get food, it better be pretty fricking phenomenal.  If we were road tripping, I might just drop those two off and go eat someplace else (and probably be back and finished before they ordered their food)

One cashier? . . . *smdh*
