Augustiner Stammhaus - Munich, Germany
A historic restaurant in historic Old Town Munich . . .
Near the beginning of our Munich Old Town Walking Tour, our guide Anna, who's family goes back 600 years in Munich, which seems fricking crazy to think about, recommended this as THE place to go if we wanted a restaurant in Old Town. Not wanting to go through the chaos of the Viktualienmarket Biergarten (not that we had any chance in christing hell of getting a table) we took her advice
The cavernous size of this place can't be overstated, and these few pics don't do that justice. It went on and on and on into different dining areas, including a large patio out front and another courtyard patio in back. The website shows them off nicely
A lovely Homemade Goulash Soup with Potatoes to start
Followed by the famous Leberkäs, "Regional style meat loaf fresh from the oven with potato-cumber-salad (sp)". I'd previously heard of it the mmm-yoso blog out of San Diego and their travels in Munich (and their much more detailed write-ups of their travels). I don't know that I'd compare it much to SPAM . . . oddly more like a bolonga loaf or vegan hotdog. Sponge-y and not a ton of flavor. The mushy potato and cucumber salad was a bit like baby food and offputting. Not a dish I'd recommend
The above may have been a special
The Augustiner Sausage Platter. Frankfurter, Regensburger Pork Sausage, a Meatball with Mash and Kraut
Goulash with Dumpling
It was a solid enough, and the family seemed to enjoy it. I wouldn't be opposed to going back, but I wouldn't race to it either. It seems like the kind of place where you won't be disappointed for the experience of it especially after your tour
