Tata's Pierogi - Elk Grove Village, IL

The best Golabki I've ever had . . .

Normally I start these write-up with pictures and descriptions of the restaurant, but this one I'm jumping right into the food because there were some knock outs

Golabki.  Let's start with one of my favorite dishes of the year.  For those maybe not of Polish descent, Golabki are cabbage rolls stuffed with a mixture of meat and rice, and covered with a tomato sauce.  Occasionally you'll find them with a brown gravy, but mostly they'll be covered in a thin offputting red sauce remeniscent of Campbell's Tomato Soup.  Or frankly, it may very well just be Campbell's Tomato Soup with some herbs and spices thrown in

At Tata's it was akin to an Italian pasta sauce, and it was fabulous.  A total game changer on the golabki sauce front

There was also a deep dark rich luxurious Mushroom Soup.  Phenominal.  The lady didn't want to share more than a few spoonfuls

Something as simple as a sausage (an excellent one at that) was taken to a new level with a twisting crispy sear.  $4 with a pickle spear
Four dishes in and we're just getting to the Pierogi Sampler?  Yeah.  And that's not to slag them, but they didn't blow up my skirt.  Fillings varied from pretty good to meh.  Nothing blew me away.  The presentation was upclassed, but they could have used a fry-up in butter

The one miss of the nigth were the Potato Pancakes.  Flavorless and boring.  A simple potato pancake can be craveworthy.  These tasted of nothing much.  Oh well
The ladies do love a dessert, so I couldn't pass up the Crepes w/ Sweet Cheese.  And the plate was beautifully presented, and the crepes themselves were nice, but the flavor of the cheese left a lot to be desired

A skull glass with my beer?  So random

Well, how was the space?  Interesting.  Modern.  Stylish.  Haphazard.  Hipster-ish.  Shabby Chic.  Not what I'd expect from a Polish joint for sure.  Was nice.  I dug eating there

Dominating a freezer case were a ton of packaged pierogi to go, including dessert and gluten free, among other things . . .

Yeah, Tata's Pierogi is looking like a must hit the next time I'm back on Chicago, especially if I can get the pierogi fried up in butter a bit
